62 East 4th Street circa 1930's

As we get ready to begin a $1.5 million restoration to our facade, I have been asked for archival information about our building. It has such a rich and colorful history. Our building, at 62 East 4th Street was built as a social hall in 1889. It hosted meetings by John Philip Sousa as he established the first musicians union in NYC as well as the early ILGWU (International Ladies Garment Workers Union) organizational meetings. East 4th Street was at the center of social activism at the turn of the century.

In the 1930's, the ballroom where these meetings were held was converted into a theater which continues in operation. A stage and proscenium were added, the murals from the original construction remained. It was used by many Yiddish theater companies of the time, it housed a television studio where many early TV shows were filmed.

In 1969, Andy Warhol rented the 150 seat Fortune Theater(as it was called then) at 62 East Fourth Street, with Gerard Malanga as manager, and put on a series of hardcore male porn films.

According to Victor Bockris, the porn cinema was Paul Morrissey's idea. It was called Andy Warhol's Theater: Boys to Adore Galore. Gerard Malanga was in charge of the operation and the "paperwork was done under his name and company, Poetry on Film." Gerard "managed the theater and ran the music behind the silent reels."

The co-manager was poet Jim Carroll who also took tickets. Joe Dallesandro worked as projectionist for several weeks, replacing his brother who had been committed to Bellevue mental hospital. According to Jim Carroll, Joe Dallesandro was also secretly making a bit of extra money by taking clients into "a small sofa-filled room beside the projection booth" and having sex with them. In the early seventies, it hosted productions featuring three Warhol Superstars, Jackie Curtis, Holly Woodlawn and Candy Darling.
In the midst of one of these productions, Francis Ford Coppola rented the theater and shot the famous operetta scene from Godfather 2.

We are thrilled to announce our second new works commission series of Dance@DMAC. Our first commission program was presented this fall and consisted of new works, by Keely Garfield, Julian Barnett, Maria Hassabi, Anna Sperber and Alex Escalante.
As we expand our dance programming, DMAC is seeking to commission 10 new dance works. The new works will be premiered during the first two weeks of June 2009 at our beautiful turn of the century playhouse. Each program will consist of 3-4 new works no longer than 10 minutes in length and will be presented on three separate evenings. Choreographers will receive a commission fee of $500.00 and adequate rehearsal time in one of our studios. If you would like to apply please complete the form below.

I remember it so clearly.......he walked into the Born To Rumba audition, he said, "Hi, I'm Al Rodriguez and I am Marijuana"....and he was. For over 500 performances he entertained sold out houses with his outrageous, over the top antics but most of all with his heart felt performance. Audiences loved him. The fact is we all loved him. To be on stage with Al was deliciously dangerous. He knew that I would let him throw what ever he came up with into his performance and then post-show we would sit down at the Kiev over his staple diet of 2 fried eggs, French fries, the ever present cup coffee and edit. The next night the changes might be put into the show.

As a playwright, one is fortunate to find an actor who can bring to life so brilliantly, so fully realized, what one has written. Al did that for me in spades. For over a decade we worked together on a myriad of projects. Al was always the first at rehearsals, fully prepared and ready to go wherever you asked him to.

He was my muse. It wasn't always easy but I can tell you that working with Al was creatively challenging, brutally honest and a whole lot of fun.

I will miss him, forever.

The following clip is of Al performing a segment from his show stopping "How I Love A Banana" . This analog clip was shot for Japanese television who discovered our little show the third week of performances....way before anyone else did. It was done with a piano track and not much else. Our show got grander, funnier, more polished but at the core there was always Al's performance as the lovable Marijuana. Al was a multifaceted performer, Marijuana is just one manifestation of his tremendous talent.

Al D. Rodriguez, a New York-based actor of stage and screen who was also once a vital part of the Broadway.com editorial team, died on July 30 after a brief bout with liver cancer. He was 45 years old.

Off-Broadway, Rodriguez was best known for his critically acclaimed work in the original cast of the long-running musical Born to Rumba!. Set in a pre-Castro Havana nightclub, the show started its long run at the Duo Theatre in 1991, with Rodriguez playing the role of drag showgirl Marijuana for more than 500 performances. He also appeared on the original cast recording and returned to play Marijuana again at the Duo in the musical's sequel, Beyond Born to Rumba!

Other theater credits include the role of detective Munoz in the national tour of City of Angels, The King at the Public Theater English Only Restaurant at Puerto Rican Traveling Theatre, Tooth and Claw at the Arden Theatre and Night of the Iguana at the Olney Theatre.

On the big screen, Rodriguez was seen in the movie musical The Producers and featured as Cuqui opposite Benjamin Bratt in Piñero.

Beyond his performing career, Rodriguez was a web designer and video editor. He joined the Broadway.com editorial team in 2000 as our first video editor, and was a driving force in the launch of the site's video section. As a web designer, Rodriguez created and ran the official websites for two of his well-known friends, Grey's Anatomy star Sara Ramirez and Carson Kressley of TV's How to Look Good Naked.

Raised in a Cuban household in Washington Heights, Rodriguez was proud to be a true New Yorker. Known for his quick wit, charming manner and adoration of musical theater, he is mourned by family and a large circle of friends.
A memorial service is being planned.

Aszure Barton was born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. She is the Artistic Director of Aszure Barton & Artists, and has been commissioned to create new works for Mikhail Baryshnikov, Fany-Yi Sheu, The National Ballet of Canada, Sydney Dance Company, American Ballet Theater II, The Juilliard School, Les Ballets jazz de Montréal, The Martha Graham Dance Company, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, among others. She choreographed the Broadway production of The Threepenny Opera starring Alan Cumming, Jim Dale, Nellie Mackay, and Cyndi Lauper (a new translation by Wallace Shawn, directed by Scott Elliott). Ms. Barton is the recipient of numerous grants and awards from across North America and overseas, and has choreographed numerous international film projects. She was recently designated a Paul D. Fleck Fellow at The Banff Centre, she is the Resident Choreographer for bjm_danse Montréal, and she has been an Artist-in-Residence at the Baryshnikov Arts Center since 2005.
Aszure Barton & Artists is an organization dedicated to the growth of artists and production of contemporary dance performance. MISSION & OBJECTIVE The NYC Downtown Short Film Festival is a program of DUO Multi Cultural Arts Center a (501 c3) non-profit organization located at 62 East 4th Street in New York City's East Village. The mission of DUO is to create, promote and celebrate multi cultural arts through theater, music, dance and film.

ABOUT THE FESTIVAL Welcome to the 4th 2008 NYC Downtown Short Film Festival(NYCDSFF). The Festival takes place the same week as the Tribeca Film Festival, a time in our city when New Yorkers and visitors have "film festival" on the brain.For the past three years our screenings have been sold out events. In response to the number of New Yorkers who have expressed an interest in attending these screenings and the increasing number of films submitted, the NYCDSFF is changing the way we receive submissions to our festival and how we screen those films.The NYCDSFF will now have a year-long rolling deadline, submissions will be accepted from June-May of each year. As films are received, they will be screened for technical proficiency and we will present monthly screenings of those film accepted. At each screening, audience members along with our screening staff will be given comment cards and asked to rate each film. The NYCDSFF will tally the results and the highest rated films from each screening will then be invited to participate in the 4th 2008 NYC Downtown Short Film Festival which will take place May 2008.We believe these changes will better serve the needs of short film makers and audiences who want to see these new innovative, challenging and exciting films. One must never underestimate the power of screening a new film for a NYC audience.

Welcome to the NYC Downtown Short Film Festival Audience Choice screenings. For the past three years our Festival has been a sold out event. In response to the number of New Yorkers who have expressed an interest in attending these screenings but were not able to get in, we are instituting the Audience Choice screenings.

Throughout the year, we'll host screenings where audience members, along with our Film Festival committee, will be given comment cards and asked to rate each film. The NYCDSFF will tally the results and the highest rated films from each screening will then be invited to participate in the next NYC Downtown Short Film Festival, taking place in May, 2008.You usually spend 2 hours and over ten dollars to see a single movie. We give you an evening of well crafted films for ten dollars. Our screening room is an intimate turn of the century theater with movie house seating and wide aisles for viewing comfort. Each evening's programming consists of 4-5 shorts and will last approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes We will be featuring some of the best short films being produced internationally as well as the work of established actors and directors.

The NYCDSFF has showcased the work of established actors and directors such as, Jesse L. Martin (Law & Order; Rent) Neil Flynn (Scrubs) G. Gordon Liddy, Blanche Baker, Eddie Murphy (Shrek, Dream Girls), Dan Butler (Frasier), Robert Guthrie (Expiration Day),David Lawrence, Emily Deschanel, Melissa Joan Hart, Gary Marshall, Tony Tanner, Jerry Manthey, John Savage, Nick Tate, Lucky Vanous, Sandra Santiago and Kevin Conway, among many other talented young actors working in industry today.

We believe these changes will better serve the needs of short film makers and the NYC audiences who want to see these new, innovative, challenging and exciting films made by the freshest talent working in film today.So join us in being part of the process. You determine which films will be screened at the Festival and which film will be voted Best of Festival.

DUO Theater's In A Different Light Program will present Robert Patrick's KENNEDY'S CHILDREN. The series presents great American plays with all Latino casts providing Latino actors with the chance to work and be seen in plays in which they are seldom cast. This is the 18th production of this very successful series which has featured Latino casts in such plays as BENT by Martin Sherman, THE NORMAL HEART by Larry Kramer, BETRAYAL by Harold Pinter among others.

Kennedy's Children is an incisive portrait of a lost generation's wistful hope and bewildered and embittered disillusionment. This emotionally charged production will be presented in our second stage space. It will employ multimedia/multiple screens using digital and film images to recreate the turbulent 60's. Come enjoy a complimentary drink in our re-creation of an East Village bar as the 1960s come to life before you. The cast includes Sol Marina Crespo, Robert Gonzalez Jr., Tristan Laurence, Alba Ponce de Leon and Indira Obregon.

An hour of contemporary American music for woodwinds

Zéphyros Winds will perform compositions by two contemporary American masters during this one-hour concert.

John Harbison wrote his Wind Quintet, a commission by the Naumburg Foundation, in 1978. This work is one of the true masterpieces of chamber music from the second half of the 20th Century. In five movements this work of great musical and emotional scope creates a world of images that is arresting and immensely memorable. It is a favorite of Zéphyros and audiences, and this ensemble finds that it stimulates the most post-concert conversation of almost anything they perform.

Donald Erb’s “Five Red Hot Duets for Two Contrabassoons” will be performed by Zéphyros member Douglas Quint and guest contrabassoonist Harry Searing. Prix de Rome winning composer Donald Erb has written one of the few works for the unusual and humorous contrabassoon duo. Harry Searing is of this country’s premier contrabassoonists, and performs and records regularly with nearly every New York City area orchestra. He has also performed with The Chicago Symphony and the Hong Kong Philharmonic.

Zéphyros Winds is recognized as one of the nations leading chamber ensembles, with appearances across the country at major concert venues, including Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall, The Library of Congress, Wolf Trap, and the Great Performers series at Lincoln Center. Zéphyros made their concerto debut with the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra and Louis Langrée conducting Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante, K. 297b, opening the festival’s 2004 season. Zéphyros was a finalist for the Naumburg Award, and was overall winner at the Fischoff Competition. They have toured with the renowned pianists Pedja Muzijevic and Charles Wadsworth. Radio broadcasts include Performance Today for National Public Radio, Public Radio International’s Music from Chautauqua, and WNYC’s Around New York. Zéphyros Winds has performed residencies at colleges and universities around the country and has given master classes at The Juilliard School and The Yale School of Music. Their recording of Irving Fine’s Partita for Woodwind Quintet is on Bridge Records. A self released recording of works by Gounod and Mozart is available through their website, located at zephyroswinds.com.

(New York) – Christian Siméon’s HYENAS makes a much-anticipated NYC premiere with a four-week engagement May 25 through June 17 at the DUO Theater in East Village. Daniel Pettrow stars as Théodore-Frédérique Benoît in this monodrama, adapted and directed by Paul Verdier, based on real events surrounding a historical double murder in Paris.

Paris, 1832. A young man is accused of a double murder, that of his male lover and his own mother. In his prison cell, during his last night, he relives the nightmare of the murders, his trial and the shock of a death sentence. A night of hell before facing the guillotine in the morning. Strong language and nudity.

HYENAS runs May 25 through June 17, 2006 at the Duo Theater, 62 East 4th Street, between Second Avenue and Bowery, in East Village, Manhattan. The 2nd Annual NYC Downtown Short Film festival is seeking submissions for a festival of Short Films to be presented in New York City April 24-26, 2006.
The Downtown Short Film Festival is a program of DUO Multicultural Arts Center a (501 ©) 3 non-profit organization located at 62 East 4th Street in New York City’s East Village.
